Basics

Battlefield 2 is a team based first person shooter. The main goal of the game is to collectively defeat the other team by killing them before they kill you and capturing as many of the key areas on the map as possible. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. First thing is first - and that means we start with controlling your player effectively.

Running, Gunning, and Apologizing
*Note: While the controls of Battlefield 2 are fully customizable, this guide assumes that you have left them at the default settings.

Walk Like a Soldier
The easiest way to get your head blown off is to poke it out where it doesn't belong. To stay alive, you're going to need to stay out of the line of fire. Here's how to move your fighter around.

Key Motion
W Walk forward
A Strafe Left
D Strafe Right
S Move Backward
Spacebar Jump
Ctrl Crouch
Z Prone (lay on the ground)
W Walk Forward
9 Parachute
E Enter/Exit Vehicle
G Pickup Kit

If you double tap the W Key and then hold it down, your soldier will begin running. You can also begin running by holding down the Shift Key. Use this to quickly pass through regions with no cover. You won't be able to run forever. Your soldier will get tired, as indicated by the stamina bar on the lower left portion of your HUD. Judge your distances and time your runs to make them most effective.

By Crouching, you can hide your body behind various items throughout the field and shoot over them, thus presenting the enemy with a smaller target. Laying Prone is the best way to make yourself a small target and stay hidden in open terrain. Use the Prone position when in open field fights or when you want to crawl around unseen.

Parachuting is vital, even when jumping off of buildings, as it is the only way to prevent damage to your health when you hit the ground. It doesn't matter when the parachute comes out, so long as it is out when you hit the ground, so have fun free-falling out of planes and helicopters until just before you hit the ground. Or, parachute down slowly while raining death down from above. You can tell if you are parachuting by the small icon that appears in the lower right side of the screen.

Talk Like a Soldier
If you want to win at Battlefield 2, you're going to need to work with your teammates. Communication is the backbone of any relationship, and that includes online battles. If you have a microphone, you can use it to talk to your team. Otherwise, you're stuck using the keyboard.

Key Action
B Push To Talk
J Say All
K Say Team
L Say Squad
Q Main Radio
T Sec. Radio
V Com. Channel
Page Up Vote Yes
Page Down Vote No

Don't be shy to talk things out with your team and squad mates. Having universal strategies and objectives can go a long way towards victory. Listen to your Commander and Squad Leader. They're the ones who are going to keep everyone working as a team. Any rally points they give you will be indicated by a line directing you to it on your mini map. If you don't like what they're saying, well then maybe it is time for you to think about becoming a leader.

The J, K, and L Keys will be used to communicate through typing. After you press them, a prompt will appear on the screen where you can type a message. Hit Return to send it or cancel the action. The most important communications button is the Q Key. If you hold it down you will bring up a prompt with 10 quick sayings. Here you can quickly call for help or give fast commands. The Spotted button in the center is quite exceptional. If you see enemy troops, you can alert the rest of your team. By clicking it with the Left Mouse Button, you'll send an alert out that will quickly mark enemy troops on all of your mini-maps. By clicking the Spotted button with the Right Mouse Button, a new list of commands will come up. Here, you can alert your team to a more specific threat and your location will be highlighted on all mini maps with a red target.

Be sure to apologize if you accidentally kill a teammate. They'll be given the option to forgive you (by Voting No). If they don't forgive you, you'll take a big hit on the scoreboard.

Know Your Surroundings
You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there. - Yogi Berra

Maps in Battlefield 2 can get very large. Even on the small maps though, you're going to have to know where you are trying to get to if you want to arrive there alive. A limited amount of area detail is given to you at all times in the upper right hand corner of your HUD. Read below to find out how to change your view.

Key View Change
N Zoom Minimap
N Enlarge Minimap to 3/4 Screen
Enter Spawn Screen
Caps Lock Squad Screen

On the Squad Screen, you can join a squad, create a new squad, or apply to be a Commander. Being a part of a squad is highly recommended as it is the best way to organize tactics in a small group. You can also choose to commit suicide on this screen. Why would you want to do that? Well, despite the 2 point penalty 15 second wait, it is a great way to get to a new Capture Point that your teammates just secured on the other side of a giant map. Hey, it beats walking when no vehicles are around.

The Spawn Screen is used for selecting where you will respawn after you die. You can do this during the 15 second wait that happens after you die. You won't respawn until after you leave this screen, so feel free to take your time selecting which Kit you would like to respawn with. You can choose to respawn at a Capture Point controlled by your team or with your Squad Leader.

The mini map is your best friend. It is even a better friend than your Nintendog. It will show any vehicles, teammates, Capture Points, and special units (such as radars or artillery). Unfortunately, the mini map will not show enemy troop or vehicle locations, unless they are spotted by a radar, UAV, or fellow troop alert. Use the mini map to help coordinate your assaults and defenses, as well as plan your trip from one Capture Point to the next.

Kill Them, Kill Them All

Tal Says:
Knives are a one-stab, one-kill. If you're in extremely close quarters combat, it's often best to switch to the knife and go for the jugular.

No matter what your role on the battlefield, when the brown stuff hits the fan, you better be ready, willing, and able to use your gun. While each character class is equipped with a different set of weapons, the general mechanics are the same. Use the mouse to look around. You can switch from one weapon to the next by using the numbers at the top of your Keyboard. Or, you can scroll through them with your Mouse Wheel or by pressing the F Key. The weapons won't switch until you highlight the one you want and then press the Left Mouse Button.

With a gun out, you will probably notice the targeting reticule in the center of your screen. Pull the trigger by clicking the Left Mouse Button and that's where the bullet goes. Simple, right? Not quite. If you are moving around, the targeting reticule will expand in size. This means that your shot is going to be less accurate than you might want. By dropping prone or crouching, the accuracy of your shot increases.

If you definitely want to kill that guy in front of you, click the Right Mouse Button to use your gun's sighting and zoom in (if the weapon can). Remember, if you hold down the trigger with an automatic weapon, it will cause your arm to shake and the bullets to stray away from your target.

Every class, except for the Anti-tank, comes equipped with some form of grenade. Switch to them with the 4 Key. By pressing the Left Mouse Button, you'll throw a grenade with maximum strength. By pressing and holding down the Right Mouse Button, you can wind up your throw. This will allow you to have more accuracy on mid range throws, but takes some extra time.

Tal Says:
Switching your weapon from automatic to burst or single-fire can make you much more accurate, and is good if you're shooting from a far range. You can do this by pressing the 3 Key (the same button that switches to your weapon).

This is only an introduction to combat. To read more details on each specific class and their weapons, go to the Instruction Kit page.

I Don't Want to Kill People on My Team, Do I?
No, no you don't. Your team colors are Blue and your squadmates are in Green, regardless of what force you are fighting for. Your enemy will be highlighted in Red. When you aim towards someone, their name will be highlighted. If the name is Blue or flashing Green, don't shoot them! So, please, for the love of all that is good, only shoot at names highlighted in Red.

What the Heck am I Doing?
Good question. Battlefield 2 (until mods are released) is a completely team based conquest game. To win, your team is going to need to take control and hold as many Capture Points as possible. Capture Points, along with Squad Leaders, are also the points where you can choose to respawn after you die.

To gain control of a Capture Point, you'll have to take down your opponent's flag and raise yours. To do so, you'll have to be within the capture radius of the flag pole. This doesn't mean you have to be right next to the flag. Crouching behind objects, hiding behind walls, or lying prone in a corner are great ways to neutralize and capture flags without being seen and shot.

*Note: The more people you have within the capture radius, the faster the enemy's flag will be lowered and yours raised.

The game score is based on Tickets, which are displayed in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Your team's number of Tickets is the number of reinforcements available to be called out. Each time someone on your team dies, your team loses a ticket when they respawn. Medics can prevent this from happening by reviving a downed soldier.

There are three types of game play, all of them conquest based.

  • Double Assault: This is what you'll play in the single player mode, or on any 16 player maps online. Each team will start with one Capture Point and one or two neutral Capture Points. You can increase the rate at which the opponent's Tickets are reduced by controlling more than half of the Capture Points on the map.

  • Assault: In this mode, there is an attacking team and a defending team. The attacking team generally starts with one uncapturable spawn point while the defending team controls the rest of the map. Either team can increase the rate at which the opponent's Tickets decrease by holding all of the Capture Points on the map.

  • Head On: Similar to Double Assault, except now each team has one base that is uncapturable. Just like Double Assault, you can increase the rate at which the opponent's Tickets are reduced by controlling more than half of the Capture Points on the map.

But Wait, There's More
If this game were all about just capturing flags, there wouldn't be enough incentive to play as a team. So, a point system was developed to reward or punish you for certain actions.

Action Point Reward
Kill 2
Capture Flag 2
Neutralize Flag 2
Capture Assist 1
Defend Capture Point 1
Kill Assist 1
Driver Assist 1
Repair 1
Heal Teammate 1
Revive 1
Resupply 1
Team Damage -2
Team Vehicle Damage -1
Team Kill -4
Suicide -2

As you can see, you'll lose all of your points very quickly if you start hurting your teammates. In the same manner, you'll be justly rewarded for helping them out in a pinch. You can view the scoreboard at any time by pressing the Tab Key. There you'll see your overall score under the trophy icon. The next column indicates your teamwork score, with any point punishments calculated into it. The crosshair icon shows how many kills you have gotten and the skull icon tells you how many times you have died. The last column indicates your ping (how quickly information is being sent to and from your computer and the server).

Points help you to move up in the ranks (which can unlock new weapons) and will help you win medals, badges, and ribbons. For more about these unlockables, read up on them on our Secrets Page.

Instruction Kit

There are 3 forces and 7 different kits to play as in Battlefield 2. Each kit comes with a unique set of weapons. Within each kit, there are slight differences between each force. You can change which kit you are playing with by selecting it on the Spawn Screen after you die. You can also change while still alive by grabbing a Kit off of a downed soldier.

Support
Medic
Sniper

Special Forces

Tal Says:
C4 isn't just for when you're on the ground. If you play as Special Ops, you can toss out a few C4 packs while you're parachuting to clear a safe landing zone if there are enemies below you. We've even taken out a few tanks guarding the flag this way.

Special Forces are perhaps the most fun Kit to play as. Their laser sighted machine gun does good damage and is accurate at even long distances and C4 is just pure explosive goodness.

C4 can be used to destroy enemy vehicles (especially tanks), artillery, radars, trailers, and key bridges. To use the C4, switch to it with the 5 Key and begin tossing it out. You can throw up to 5 C4 packs. At any time, switch to the detonator with the Right Mouse Button and then click the Left Mouse Button to set them off. The blast radius of C4 is quite large, so be sure you've given yourself some distance before setting them off or you'll take yourself out with it.

Special Forces are great for covert operations. Use them in conjunction with vehicles to slip in behind enemy lines and take control of unguarded Capture Points. Their lack of body armor makes them weak in big firefights, so use their automatic weaponry to take down solitary soldiers.

Fran Says:
Use Special Ops and C4 to destroy enemy's radar (scan), trailer (UAV), or artillery guns to incapacitate the commander. This is a devastating blow if you can also prevent their engineers from reparing.

Support
Not many people like playing with the Support Kit, but if you want some easy points when you're just starting out with the game, this is the Kit for you. The Support Kit's extra ability is that it can give out ammo packs to resupply troops. Exciting, huh? The bonus to this is that every time somebody picks up an ammo pack you drop, you get a point. Or, if you just run around with the Ammo Bag out, you'll give them out as well. If you stay with your squad and let them fire away, you can constantly replenish their ammunition giving you mega points. You can also give ammunition to nearby vehicles and infantry if you are a passenger in another.

In addition to the ammo bag, Support units also have access to the usual grenade, pistol, and knife. Besides the high scoring Ammo Bag, the main advantage to using a Support unit is access to a fully automatic machine gun. It's tough to aim a fully automatic weapon, so to increase your accuracy, crouch or lay prone and fire in short bursts. This, combined with the Body Armor make the Support unit a great addition to any attack force squad.

The PKM is a stronger fully automatic machine gun than what the Support Kit normally has. Use it in the same way you would a normal machine gun and watch the enemy soldiers go down faster.

Vehicles

Any good Battlefield 2 player knows how to use their vehicles effectively. With such large maps, vehicles are the best way to quickly traverse the land and get into the action. Additionally, vehicles are extremely powerful. They're hardy, fast, and have great destructive capabilities. Even if you're just riding along in one, you'll still get points for a Team Vehicle Assist every time someone in the ride makes a kill. Practice in your rides and you'll be moving up the leaderboards quickly.

In all vehicles, the F1-F5 keys will switch you through different seats in the vehicle, with the driver/pilot always being the F1 Key.

By Land

Land vehicles are great no matter what your purpose is. Whether you want to get to another Capture Point quickly, take out enemy vehicles, or simply blow tons of stuff up, a land vehicle can serve you well.

Controls
Land vehicles are easy to control using the default settings, so unlike aircraft, you won't really need to configure a joystick to work them.

Key Action
W Accelerate
S Decelerate
D Steer Right
A Steer Left
Boost Shift
X Pop Smoke (APC only)
E Enter/Exit

Jeeps
Jeeps are your best bet for getting from point A to point B quickly and in one piece. There are two varieties of jeeps. The smaller ones can carry 3 total passengers (including the driver) and are a little faster, while the larger jeeps can carry 4 troops. Either one is a good choice for covering terrain quickly and taking out infantry. Even in the larger jeeps, the armor oftentimes seems nonexistent, so trying to take on anything larger than another jeep is not suggested.

In terms of firepower, the first passenger in both varieties of jeeps can use a heavy machine gun. This gun is great against infantry, helicopters, and other jeeps. In the smaller jeep, the second passenger has access to a light machine gun capable of clearing out infantry blocking your way. The speed of these vehicles also makes them capable of just running over unsuspecting infantry who have wandered out onto the roads.

Mark Ryan Says:
Using the Spec Op kit, strap C4 all around a jeep. Then, drive it into an enemy Capture Point and detonate it as a car bomb.

The jeeps you have access to are the smaller DPV (USMC) and FAV (Chinese/MEC) as well as the heavy HMMWV (USMC), NJ 2046 (Chinese), and GAZ 39371 (MEC).

APCs
Armored Personnel Carriers work great as both a troop carrier and an assault vehicle. They come fully loaded with strike force power, can hold up to 5 total passengers, have good armor, and are even amphibious. That's right, you can drive an APC across a lake, river, or through the ocean! The driver has access to an autocannon, 6 missiles, and smoke grenades. Each of the four passengers mans a machine gun capable of taking out any infantry in the vicinity.

There are three varieties of APCs on the battlefield: the LAV-25 (USMC), the Wz 551 (Chinese), and the BTR-90 (MEC)

Tal Says:
Always attack tanks and other armored vehicles from the back if you can. The armor is much thicker in the front of vehicles than in the back, so it takes less shots to take them out.

Tanks
These are the big boys and their speed reflects that. Don't expect to move very quickly, but when you do everyone will get out of the way. Tanks are capable of carrying a driver and one passenger, although the passenger only has access to his normal weapons. The driver, in contrast, has access to an autocannon and 12 anti-aircraft missiles that are heat seeking. Use the missiles to lock on to helicopters and planes as they fly by and you'll soon be rid of them. The autocannon works well if helicopters keep using flares in addition to its good strength against troops and small vehicles. Drive one of these alongside a fully loaded APC to cover it from above and you have a nearly unstoppable strike force - just watch out for Special Forces and their C4.

The three tanks available for your use are the M6 Bradley (USMC), Type 95 (Chinese), and the Tunguska (MEC).

By Sea
There is only one boat available in the game, but it works great for doing quick troop insertions where the enemy doesn't suspect it.

Controls
Boats control similar to vehicles and are easy to steer using just the keyboard.

Key Action
W Accelerate
S Decelerate
D Steer Right
A Steer Left
E Enter/Exit

Boats can hold 5 passengers plus the driver, making it possible to fit an entire squad into one. The first passenger has access to a machine gun, although it is really only strong enough to be effective against infantry. Boats don't need a dock to land, so use them to bring an entire squad in behind the enemy's main defenses for a surprise attack.

By Air

Helicopters and jets are the trickiest vehicles to operate, but are extremely versatile and tough to take down when a good pilot is behind the stick. All air vehicles can carry at least one passenger, so don't take off before they get in. They'll help protect you and attack the enemy by manning extra weaponry.

Controls
If you have a joystick, you'll want to configure it for controlling air vehicles. It makes maneuvering a plane or helicopter much simpler and you'll be less likely to crash. If you don't have access to a control pad, the default controls are here.

Key Action
W Accelerate
S Decelerate
D Steer Right
A Steer Left
Arrow Up Pitch Forward
Arrow Down Pitch Back
Arrow Right Roll Right
Arrow Left Roll Left
Afterburner (plane only) Shift
X Flares
E Enter/Exit

You can also control the pitch and roll with the mouse, which is a somewhat easier switch from land to ground control. The only way to get the hang of these air vehicles is through practice. If you find you're having trouble steering where you want, try adjusting the mouse sensitivity for these vehicles.

As soon as you get into the air, the enemy is going to try to shoot you down. Make sure you hit the X Key for flares as soon as you are alerted to an enemy lock-on (red warning signals will flash on your screen). Flares will redirect any heat seeking missile that has locked onto your craft. For the truly skilled, try flying by an enemy craft as you let the flares out. If you're lucky, the missile will lock on to the enemy craft and take them down instead of you.

Planes
There are two types of planes, fighters and bombers. The fighters are solo aircraft with high speed and agility. Due to their lack of effective ground ammunitions, the main role of a fighter is to attack other aircraft. Every fighter craft is equipped with an autocannon, 6 heat seeking missiles, and 2 bombs. If you find yourself being dogged by heat flares at every attempt to missile another pilot, try switching to the autocannon to tear your opponent to shreds. The available fighters are the F-18 E/F (USMC), F-35B (USMC), J-10 (Chinese), and the Mig-29 (MEC).

Tal Says:
Vehicles respawn fairly quickly, so don't be afraid to jump in a jet or helicopter and use it as a transport to get to a far base by jumping out and parachuting in. Chances are the enemy has moved away from their farthest base to try and capture one of yours, so it's a great time to swoop in and take a flag back.

Bombers can have a co-pilot and are equipped with a better armament for taking out ground based troops and vehicles. They're much more effective with a second passenger, so if you see someone running towards you, wait for him to get there. Use bombers to take out any enemy aircraft you see, as well as to target enemy Capture Points, vehicles (especially tanks), and large concentrations of infantry. Each bomber is equipped with an autocannon, 4 heat seeking missiles, 5 dumb bombs, and 20 laser guided missiles that can be controlled by the passenger. The available bombers are the F-15E (USMC), SU-30 (Chinese), and the SU-34 (MEC).

Remember, if you run out of ammunition or lose control, eject yourself from the aircraft and parachute down. The plane or helicopter will keep flying (and can be used in an almost kamikaze style) while you drift down to continue fighting. Plus, this will make the plane respawn back at your base, fully reloaded, for the next person to use.

Helicopters

Fran Says:
Use the Apache-style (more mobile) copters to hover over flag points with a passenger (to help accelerate the capture). Take off as soon as you've captured and repeat…

There are two types of helicopters available; transport and fighters. The apache-style attack copters are two seaters with room for a pilot and a passenger. Each attack copter is armed with 56 rockets for the pilot, while the passenger can control either an autocannon or 8 guided missiles. These rides are highly mobile, and their ability to hover in one place while laying down fire makes them devastating during an assault on a Capture Point. Don't forget to use the flares, as helicopters are an easy target for any other enemy looking to use their heat seeking missiles. The three fighter copters available are the AH-17 (USMC), Z-10 (Chinese), and the Mi-28 (MEC).

Transport helicopters are much less equipped for battle. They can carry a total of 6 people (the exact number of troops in a squad) including the pilot. Only the first two passengers have access to any weapons, and then it is only a turret machine gun. They do work perfectly for a squads looking to infiltrate enemy Capture Points. If a team parachutes in dropping C4 and grenades as they fall, they should have a nice clear spot to bunker down for a battle. The three transport helicopters available are the HH-60H (USMC), Z-8 (Chinese), and the Mi-17 (MEC).

Fran Says:
Use air support to drop teammates via parachute into enemy's bases. This works especially well to get Special Ops members into permanent or original-spawn bases to destroy artillery, etc.

Leading the Way

A strong Commander can make all the difference in a closely contested game, particularly in a 64 player match. To become the Commander, go to the Squad Screen. If no one has the position yet, you may apply for it. At the start of the game, if many people apply to be Commander, the person with the highest rank will be awarded the position. The control of Commander is not set in stone. If you don't like the way your Commander is operating, you can initiate a Mutiny at the Squad Screen. A vote will be initiated, and if successful, the Commander will be removed from power. Remember, if you're not doing a good job, this can happen to you! The great advantage to being a Commander is that you get a 2x multiplier bonus at the end of the round if your team is victorious.

What a Commander Should Do
A Commander has two main functions: give orders and provide support. Commanders shouldn't be on the frontlines, if he dies, the team is left without direction or backup.

Providing Support

Scan
Using your team's radar to scan the field will provide all of your troops with enemy aircraft locations. This information can be important, especially when trying to defend key locations from incoming aerial attacks. If the opponent looks like they enjoy attacking from above, use the Scan repeatedly as soon as it recharges.

UAV
The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) provides all of your troops with an enhanced radar view of the field. This means that all enemy activity within the UAV's range will show up on your team's mini maps. This provides absolutely vital information to everyone on your team. If you give an order to attack or defend a position, be sure to back your team up with a UAV to give them a way of tracking enemy movements. Use the UAV as often as it recharges to give your team the most information on enemy activity as possible.

Fran Says:
Elect a commander to provide constant UAV support. UAVs can be called for by Squad leaders as well.

Artillery
As the Commander, you can call down artillery strikes on enemy locations. If you start seeing the ground explode around you unexpectedly, that is the opposing Commander launching artillery on you! Sending an artillery strike on enemy controlled Capture Points just prior issuing an attack command can give your team the upper hand. While your opponents are ducking for cover and trying to heal wounded soldiers, your attack Squad can mop up in the confusion. You can also use artillery strikes in conjunction with the UAV. If your UAV reveals a host of vehicles moving on one of your Capture Points, use the artillery to break them up before they reach you. Be careful though, your artillery strikes can hit your own troops causing team kills, damage, and team vehicle damage. This may end up resulting in a big point hit if you rain down artillery on your own team. Use this with caution, but as often as it recharges.

Supplies
If your team is doing well, they are going to run low on supplies. Everyone is going to run low on health, ammunition, and explosives. Luckily, as Commander you can order supplies to be dropped wherever you choose on the field. It is important to drop your Supplies into locations where your team can use them. If they don't, enemies have free access to use them. Supply crates can be destroyed, so watch out for enemies doing this to you and try to do it to the enemy as often as possible. As a troop, just walk close to a supply crate to begin refilling.

Giving Orders
By pressing the Caps Lock Key, the Commander can bring up a screen that shows the entire battlefield. To give an order to a Squad Leader, find the one on the map that you want and Left Click on it. Then, Right Click where you want the order to be directed. A list of orders will then come up for you to choose from. The Squad Leader can then choose to accept the orders and relay them to his troops or to reject them. When giving orders, think about which Capture Points are vital to your advancing troops. Tell your Squads to attack key locations and defend the ones you control so that vital respawn points remain in your hands.

What You Should do Against a Commander

Cut Off Their Commands
A Commander's UAV, Scan, and Artillery commands are dependent upon structures (UAV trailer, radar, and artillery guns, respectively) inside the main base. They show up on mini maps and can be destroyed, thereby cutting off the enemy's power to use them. A great way to do this is to parachute in with a Spec Ops team and use C4 to destroy the structures. If the enemy does this to you, quickly have an engineer repair them to restore access to the commands.

Next in Command - Squad Leaders

Mark Ryan Says:
Squad Leaders should choose their actions carefully. Their ability to give and relay orders and act as a respawn point makes them extremely important on the battlefield. If you're a Squad Leader, don't rush into battle before your team.

You can choose to create your own Squad at any time, or join one that someone else created. Squads are limited to 6 people, so as a leader it is a good idea to invite a somewhat varied group of players into your squad. A squad of 6 medics is not going to be very effective - balance is the key. Remember to make a squad of players that have the same objective in mind. Sniper kits don't tend to mesh very well with Assault kits.

Squad Leaders are the only players who can directly communicate with the Commander and the troops. Any requests by normal troops must go through a Squad Leader before they can get to the Commander. It is even more important to remember to give orders to your squad. You can do this by pressing the T Key and then selecting your order.

The Rest of Us
If you're not a Squad Leader or a Commander, your job is to do all of their dirty work. Be sure to actually join a squad and communicate with the other members. Follow the orders given to you. They may not be exactly what you want to do, but an organized squad in Battlefield 2 is the one that will be most effective. The lone soldier running around shooting will be the first one to die and the last on the leaderboard.

The major difference between several of the higher ranks is that you get the "higher" rank if you have certain badges. Whichever rank you get, each pair only gives you one unlock.

It is also worth noting that the upper ranks are not progressive. You will only earn one rank per point bracket. If you make it to Master Sergeant without the awards, you will not be promoted to First upon earning the missing awards.
